Introduction to “The Journey”

Hello Arizona APCO/NENA!

We are so glad you stopped by to see us.  If you are like us, you LOVE doing the job of a Telecommunicator, 911 Operator or Dispatcher.  Do you ever think of your job as a career?   What does that word mean even, career?   https://www.merriam-webster.com defines career as “a profession for which one trains and which is undertaken as a permanent calling.”  Does that fit your situation?  You are a professional who has trained to do a difficult job that many feel called to.  But is that a career?

Many of us start in the Public Safety Communications field not necessarily looking for a career, and then the next thing we know we are 5, 10 or even more years into a job and look around and wonder, “What am I doing here?”  Whether you call what you do a job or a career, whether you reach retirement or bow out before you reach the magic age, you are definitely on a journey.

How long, how enjoyable, how much of an impact the journey has on you and your family and how much of an impact you have on others is all up to you.  You, by the nature of the position you hold, are a very influential person.  Think about it; each day you influence the lives of others just by doing your job.  You help people in crisis, you guide people who are confused, you make sure those you support are safe, have the help and resources they need to keep your community safe and make it home to their families at the end of the day.

You are a really important person in a very influential job and we need you!   Your agency, units and community needs you!  The journey you are on can be a really hard one and we want you to enjoy it and get as far as YOU want to go.   The point of these posts is to serve you and help you on your journey.

Do you know what would make them even better?  YOU!  See that little box right down there that says “Leave a Reply”?  Please leave your feedback, comments, suggestions, questions, etc. and we will do our best to incorporate your ideas and suggestions into a future post.

Check back next week when we will address the question, “Where do I go from here?”

Until next time, look for joy in your journey so that it can find you!
